Handle with care
When you need to apply a topical ointment, the best tool is a sterile cotton or synthetic pad or puff. It's pretty easy to forget and simply use what's around, most often your finger, but consider that you'll often be smearing your finger's germs back into the wound. And that's not medically sound at all. You'll want to gently spread an ointment over a possibly painful injury without causing any more pain. A sterile pad is simply the safest and most comfortable option.
